The Department of Global Ecology building is an extremely low-energy laboratory and office building in Stanford California. The mission of the Department of Global Ecology is to conduct basic research on the interactions between the earth's ecosystems, land, atmosphere, and oceans. The 11,000 square foot research complex is a high-performance building with an emphasis on energy efficiency, water conservation, use of recycled and sustainable materials, and a safe and healthy working environment. The design places a high priority on minimizing environmental impacts, while maximizing occupant comfort and health. Design criteria included the highest possible energy efficiency, an emphasis on the use of sustainable materials, and integrated energy production from photovolaics and/or wind.
